Salerno is a seaside town, perfectly nestled on the shore of the gulf, set like a pearl between the cobalt of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the lush green hills. It has one of the most beautiful old towns of the South of Italy characterized by medieval features that can be well noticed along the heart of the city.
The historical centre is made up of the typical narrow streets of the seaside towns, almost cramped where in fact you can admire the perfectly preserved architectural details. Hence the Via dei Mercanti is the oldest street in Europe. It dates back to the Middle Ages, as well as the Duomo which is an amazing work of great architectural interest and also the enchanting Arechi castle.
It is recommended to pay a visit to the Minerva Gardens, in the heart of the historical centre.
What seems clear to the visitor is an interesting set of elements attributable to the XVII and XVIII centuries. Among them, the most characteristic element is the long stairway, emphasized by pillars with a cruciform plant, which support a wooden pergola. The staircase, linking and framing visually the different levels of the garden is built on the ancient walls of the city and allows a wide and privileged view of the sea, the historic centre and hills.
From there you can easily reach the Villa Comunale, designed in 1874 at the entrance of the city when coming down from Vietri sul Mare.
The architect Casalbore designed it around the famous fountain called "Don Tullio" (or Aesculapius), created in 1790 to give refreshment to travellers coming to the city from the Amalfi Coast and Naples.
In the Villa, there are many rare plants and during Christmas time, the Artist lights are installed, which recall many famous Walt Disney tales, a real joy for the young and the old.
Just outside the Villa begins the Lungomare Trieste, a large wooded garden (entirely pedestrian, 30 meters wide and about 2 km long) along the seashore in the central part of the town centre from the commercial port to the tourist port.
